LIVE. Bioferments.
Bioferments are making their way into modern cosmetology with increasing confidence – and they are certainly creating quite a bit of a “ferment” of their own. While the process itself is by no means a new discovery, its use in cosmetics allows us to look at familiar ingredients from a new, more technological perspective.
Bacterial, yeast, plant, mineral, algal and oil ferments can support the skin microbiome, strengthen the skin barrier, hydrate, soothe inflammation, and provide antioxidant and regenerative benefits. Depending on how they are processed, we may obtain filtrates, lysates or extracts, each of which can offer somewhat different properties. That is why not all ferments are created equal, even when they sound similar on the label.
The INCI name does not always tell the whole story, as an ingredient’s performance depends, among other things, on the specific microorganism strain and the raw material undergoing fermentation.
So, bioferments are not promising a cosmetic “sprint” or a spectacular overnight transformation. They are more like a marathon for the skin – gradually supporting its natural processes and helping maintain long-term balance.
Everything points to the fact that the future of cosmetology may lie less in fighting the skin with increasingly powerful stimuli and more in working intelligently with its microbiome. Bioferments could be one of the most interesting tools driving this shift.
